GEORGE III MAHOGANY FRAMED GAINSBOROUGH LIBRARY CHAIR

England, 1765

 

 

 

The mahogany framed open arm chair with shaped crest over a rectangular back and serpentine fronted  seat

 sided by upholstered arms with downswept fluted arms with central beading, raised on square molded legs

 connected by stretchers, the seat with horsehair interior and added 1.5" squab cushion;

having old surfaces and original brass and leather casters

 

Condition: Excellent; expected nicks appropriate to age;

newly covered in linen, ready for a slipcover or upholstery

   

Note : English library chairs were introduced in the mid-18th century.
The contemporary name was a "French chair".  However they are sometimes referred 

to as Gainsborough chairs, as they resembled the low open arm chairs frequently used 

in the 18th century paintings by Thomas Gainsborough.
