FIRST PERIOD WORCESTER POWDER BLUE SHAPED PLATE

England, c1760-65

The shaped plate centering a roundel painted with a Chinese riverscape, depicting a Chinese man in a boat before a house, rocks,

trees and two pagodas, below birds in the sky, the rim with three fan shaped panels of further fishing scenes alternating with roundels

of flowerheads,  against a powder blue ground, the verso with underglaze blue sprigs and mock Chinese characters

Worcester introduced this Chinese method of painting c1760, which was produced by blowing dry cobalt thought a tube with a fine

screen on the end onto an oiled ground, the panels being masked for painting.  It produced a much softer and more interesting

ground than the previous “wet blue”, the mottling having a fine texture.  The earliest used, as did Bow, Chinese fishing villages

in the central roundel as well as the rim reserves.  Mock Oriental marks were used c1760-70.
