FIRST PERIOD WORCESTER WET MUSTARD POT AND COVER

With Matching Original Spoon

England, c1765-72

A somewhat rare wet mustard pot with original lid and matching spoon, the pot and lid in the French

reeded form, inspired by Sevres porcelains, the shoulders and lid rim with an underglaze blue lambrequin

border, the pot with a double scroll handle, the lid with a square spoon opening and surmounted by an open

3-petal flower bud finial; the matching spoon with a rococo molded scroll handle and round bowl, the bowl

with corresponding lambrequin decoration to the rim; unmarked.

Note: Wet mustard pots were designed to serve prepared mustard (a mixture of dry mustard, oil and vinegar),

which was useful in adding flavor to meats – particularly those that had remained a few days in a spring house.

A dry mustard pot also existed, having a baluster shape with tall cover and lacking a spoon.

Most blue and white wet mustard pots are in the Mansfield, Prunus Root or Fence patterns.  Those in the

French reeded form usually have a blue cell decoration, as do the various molded mustard spoons.

Condition: Excellent; one minor chip one inner petal of finial; one very small nick to spoon

3 1/2" High Overall / 2 3/4" High (pot base) / 2 1/4" Diameter
