FIRST PERIOD WORCESTER “BISHOP SUMNER” DESSERT DISH

The square shaped dish with central roundel of a mythical kylin below a flying dragon in a fenced landscape, surrounded by eight

panels  of flowers, birds and further mythical animals (no two panels being alike), all within a narrow outer border of leaves, flowerheads

and diapering; a copy of a famille verte Kangxi Chinese original, with British interpretations of the colors; gold crescent mark

 

Note :

Although this pattern originates from the 18^th century, it apparently acquired its name in the 19^th century – probably from

one of the two Bishop Sumner’s (John Sumner, Archbishop of Canterbury, or Charles Sumner, Bishop of Winchester).

This pattern is often confused with the Kylin or Bengal Tyger pattern; however, the decoration is can be seen to differ upon comparison.

 

Condition : Excellent, with light scratching to the enamels visible in very bright light
