FINE GEORGE II FADED MAHOGANY ADUJSTABLE ARCHITECT'S DESK & WRITING TABLE : AN ENLARGEMENT
England, c1745-50

Fine George II Faded Mahogany Adjustable Architects Desk & Writing Table c1745, Large Image

A fine table of highly figured dense timbers with exquisite faded color,

the rectangular ratcheting top with re-entrant corners and a retracting rest, and sided by pair of revolving brass candlestands,

above a leather-lined pull-out writing surface with central lift opening to a divided interior with revolving drawer to the right,

raised on six block-ended turned legs set on casters,

each masked by a straight false leg;
original brass fittings throughout; retains original key

Note :
We have placed this larger image for you to view the exceptional timbers and faded color of this table.
The top is a solid piece of dense wood, rich with the natural surface undulations and color that only time can provide.
The surface is impossible not to run your hand across - repeatedly - such is the allure.
And the stains represent 'who knows what had' been designed there, - or letters written there.
You will notice a wonderful stain (lower center) left years ago by overheated scissor-form candle snuffers -
the outline coincidentally matching the pair we show below of a slightly earlier date.
The brass candleslides are original and can remain out, or retract to the interior for closed table form.
As mentioned above, all brass fittings, including the key, appear unchanged.

Condition : Excellent; nicks, scratches and fading patterns appropriate to age and usage;

brass mounts and casters apparently original; overall exceptional quality and condition; exquisite color
