Of very heavy dense Cuban (Jamaican) mahogany, carved in the Georgian “Gothick” taste, having a rectangular ratcheted top with bread-board ends and book-rest on a telescopic brass-mounted shaft ending in a Gothic knop, supported by a columnar shaft having three concave flutes raised on carved arched tripod legs ending in pad feet,

all subtly carved in the Gothic manner; also suitable as a side table

As yet, we have not found a known example of this stand.  However the originality of design, and the quality of execution and timbers recall the furniture of Thomas Chippendale Jr. and Gillows. The late 18^th and early 19^th century” Gothick” (Gothic) revival, unlike the 16-17 ecclesiastical references, was purely decorative in nature.

Condition : Excellent; re-gluing to a short shrinkage crack on the top; a few minor expected nicks and scratches;

good color and early finish; the top with a repolish and minor warp (visible in images); just excellent quality!
