M. FORD CREECH ANTIQUES & FINE ARTS

EARLY 17TH CENTURY CARVED OAK PANEL
Northern England or Continent, c1620-40

Of quite high quality with excellent deep rich color and patination,
the elongated rectangular panel with rounded ends,
centering a "sun in splendor"
sided by two coiled sea serpents with tongues extended, issuing from
acanthus-leaf bodies having overscrolled tails with further punched textural details,
all on a chip-carved and punched ground
and below a foliate-carved cornice

The sun in splendor, as well as the "green man", with serpents or lions is a common motif,
and difficult to place precisely. The most likely locations of origin are the North of England, and the
Northern regions of the Continent, including from Germany and the Low Countries to Scandinavia.

Condition : Excellent preserved condition with rich color and patination; original use unknown;
the top moulding an addition at an unknown time, but of the same age and quality;
the backside with older stabilizing braces; a few flecks of paint old spatter to its surface

9" High x 50" Long
