COQUILLA NUT & LIGNUM VITAE CARVED & TURNED TABLE NUTMEG GRATER
England, Late 18th / Early 19th Century

 

 

 

Separating into three sections :
the top section
carved from coquilla nut in a acorn form that much resembles a King's Crown and contains an ivory set blue steel grater ;
the middle section
a ring turned and carved waisted pedestal of lignum vitae, geometric carving and screw threads to the top, the base having diagonally carved leaves over a threaded base;
the lower section
of bi-colored lignum vitae, basket-carved with threaded a deep opening for storage for nuts

 

Condition : Excellent; lower section with one small oxidized dent;
normal & superficial shrinkage crack to the base verso (does not go through, shown below)

 

Note :
Acorn form coquilla nut nutmeg graters are readily obtainable.
However table coquilla nutmeg graters are moderately rare.
Almost all known coquilla nutmeg graters originate from England.
