CONTINENTAL SILVER PYX (PIX)

With Armenian Inscription, c1800

 

 

 

 

 

 

Of oval lidded form, the hinged lid engraved with a cross and light rays, the underside with an

Armenian inscription and dated 1801; gilt interior

 

Note: A pyx (or pix) is a small container that is used for transporting the Eucharist to the ill.  The use of the pyx

was a custom as early as the 1st century for the ill.  During the first three centuries, the congregation also took

home portions of he consecrated Eucharist for use during the week for home services.  That custom

was discontinued in the 4th century.

 

Condition: The top with a regular pattern of scratches, reportedly from ring impressions when making

the sign of the cross over the host; no breaks or repairs
