The elongated oval slightly convex silver-mounted tapering box with hinged reeded lid and shaped thumb lift,

decorated with raised gilding, translucent green and blue enamels on a finely speckled blue and pink ground,

the lid depicting the god Poseidon and semi-draped consorts riding dolphins between arabesques,

the body with further arabesques and strapwork*; enamel interior with gilt rim,

the rim marked as shown below; the exterior body rim with 2 (possibly 3) further small indescribable marks

*Identical arabesques painted in this same unique fashion were found on a white lemon-form enameled bonbonniere with

charge and discharge marks for Julien Berthe, Berlin, Formery Workshop, or Paris, 1750. 

(See illustration below).

 This unusual & distinctive style of decoration was found on a number of Berthe enamel boxes. 

It is suggested that these boxes, although made in Berlin at the Formery workshop,

carry French hallmarks since being mounted in Paris.

Condition : Overall very good, with a tiny area or repair to the ground on the base;

scattered small losses to enameled decoration,

much more visible in these oversized images than when handling the box;

hinge in excellent condition
