RARE COMMONWEALTH SILVER MINIATURE PORRINGER

E.T Above Crescent, London, 1658

 

 

 

 

 

    

 

 

 

Of small deep round form with simple flat chased and punched floral and leaf design, characteristic of the Commonwealth period,

wire s-scroll handles, above a low spreading pedestal base, the clear marks on the upper rim: E.T over a crescent; crowned

leopard, lion passant; date letter; verso of foot with lion passant. Condition: Excellent

Ref: Similar miniature porringers by E.T sold Christie’s King Street, 1994, with provenance How of Edinburgh invoice for 1942;

a second with an invoice from Mallett, 1944. A larger porringer with the later chased with the Royal monogram of Queen Anne

and the pricked inscription 'Nata 6 Febr 1665', the birth date of Queen Anne – probably chased in 1702 at her ascension to the

throne, also bears the ET mark.

 

Condition: One wire handle reattached and possibly replaced; otherwise excellent with crisp marks

 

Porringers and caudle cups, often with covers and sometimes with matching salvers, were used to serve spiced alcoholic

drinks that could be shared by more than one person. This drink often contained a mixture of warm wine and brandy or tea

mixed with bread, eggs, sugar, and spices. They were also used to feed porridge, or caudle, or broth to women convalescent

after childbirth, and to young infants.
