RARE CHINESE EXPORT SOFT PASTE PICKLE DISH
after an ENGLISH VAUXHALL ORIGINAL
China, c1760
Formed as a curled and deeply serrated sycamore leaf on a short curved stem, the underside veined and having
three peg feet, painted in blue and white with a bird on a blooming peony branch beside two small insects
Condition: Excellent, retaining original stem; several miniscule rim frits; one firing flaw as a tiny cut at the rim
NOTE:
The soft paste copies of English porcelain are quite rare.

As a rule, the English and European porcelain manufacturers and painters took their inspirations from silver,
as well as Chinese and Japanese porcelains. On some very rare occasions, the Chinese copied the English and
European wares – usually in hard paste, as this example, but occasionally in soft paste. In the case of the latter,
it is often quite difficult to determine the Chinese origin.
