CHINESE EXPORT WUCAI OPEN SALT

Kangxi, 1680-1720

Of early round trencher form with applied enameled decoration, the sides with a floral vine above

combed and painted lotus petals between two rows of dots, the interior with a peony spray flat border

with petals and line diapering

Condition: excellent; minor slice to underside of upper rim, visible in photo #2 above

Note:  Porcelain open salts are ideal for daily use - and my choice for the daily dining table.  As salt will not corrode

the porcelain, the dish can be left in the open for continual use.  Salt at this time was taken with the fingers -

a custom I still employ.  Salt spoons came into use about 1720, first in the shovel form.  These, or other salt

spoons, can be employed, if desired.
