CHINESE EXPORT “PALACEWARE” PLATE

Late Qianlong, China, c1795

Overglaze enamels and gilt, centering a “Mandarin” decorated scene depicting a Chinese lady playing a lute in a garden within a gilt

shaped roundel bordered by a pink diapered band painted in bianco sopra bianco with white lotus scrolls, the wide border in gilt reserved

with cartouches of flora within turquoise scrolled borders

Condition: Excellent!  Gilt in extraordinary condition; minor enamel wear to the fine facial features

Note: “Palaceware” refers to the sumptuous and popular gilt-bordered central Mandarin scene genre of porcelain.  This includes the

“Rockefeller” pattern, brought onto the market by the Rockefeller family for 3 decades.  The central scenes are numerous, and derive from

books and prints.  Popular c1790-1820, it represents the Honourable East India Company’s last efforts to perpetuate their dominance in the

porcelain market before the Industrial Revolution provided copious lower priced pieces from England’s own porcelain manufactories.
