CHARLES II LACE BACK TREFID SPOON

A very early example, of heavy gauge, the lace back bowl with a straight shaft ending in a scrolled lace-top

trefid terminal pin pricked  verso *L* over *I*S* with further stars above and below

 

Condition: Very good; some wear to bowl center verso; maker and date mark only;

marks slightly weak

 

Nathaniel Brassey, citizen of Haberdasher, was the master for both well known spoonmakers Thomas Tysoe

and Samuel Hitchcock. See London Silver Spoonmakers 1500-1697, Timothy Kent, p. 49 for discussion

 

Lace-back trefids are much rarer than plain trefids – the earliest of the modern form.  The earliest

trefid recorded is in 1662, becoming more common in the 1670’s, and were made only until c1700.
