CHARLES II BIBLICAL NEEDLEWORK & STUMPWORK on SILK
England, mid-17th century

 

 

Embroidered in several stitches and stumpwork with a Biblical scene :
probably the Queen of Sheba kneeling before a crowned King Solomon who holds a scepter,
and accompanied by a servant standing behind (First Kings 10, and Chronicles 9)
;
depicted within a canopied tent supported by two large central columns,

above a floor of squared 'tiles', sided by a large rose or thistle, and a tower with flag on the right,
and by as urn and a ewer on a sarcophagus to the left;

the background on each side with clouds, and trees on hillsides having French knotted foliage;
housed in a well carved and partially parcel gilt baroque pierced and scrolled frame;
the frame and glass both early, the glass with bubbling and further imperfections

 

Condition : With some expected age fading; few areas of degradation to silk;
the frame with wear appropriate to age
