ANTIQUE CAUCASIAN KARABAGH KASIM USHAG

Causasus, last quarter of the 19th century

 

 

 

Very rare collector rug, wool on wool foundation with all vegetal dyes, interesting bright colors, the center with a

Kasim-Ushag complex botanical medallion (derived from a flower calyx)*, within diagonal running dog corners, the main border

a flower/vine meander sided by barber-poling and a running dog outer border

 

Note: This example cam be found in nearly every catalog about Caucasian rugs.  This type of Kasim-Ushag medallion is referred to

by Peter Stone, Tribal and Village Rugs, as the tour de force of botanical medallions.  Ian Bennett, Oriental Rugs, Vol. I, suggests

that the form is derived from 17^th century embroideries and closely related to 18^th century rugs.  Analysis is extensive.  It is further

Condition: in excellent state of preservation, high pile with some well done restoration to the central area,

well blended and visible only from the underside
