BOW PORCELAIN DOLPHIN & 3-SHELL SWEETMEAT OR PICKLE STAND

England, c1752-55

The soft-paste porcelain sweetmeat stand or pickle stand painted underglaze in blue, comprising three shell-shaped dishes,

each raised on a conical peg foot joined by a central coral 'sponge' with applied shells, the dishes surmounted by a blue dolphin-form

handle with its tail in the air, each dish painted on the interior with a bunch of grapes resting on a veined leaf within a shaped

feuille-de-choux rim

These stands have been attributed to modeler John Toulouse, who worked at Bow in the early 1750’s, moving to Worcester

in the mid to late 1760’s, and supposedly taking these molds with him. Real sea shells would have been cast for the feet and for

the shells embedded in the coral center, which would have been pricked with a sharp instrument for its texture.

A similar Bow verso of a stand in the Partridge pattern is illustrated with a "waster" (pictured below) in Bow Porcelain,

Adams & Redstone, , PL. 53, p. 118. It is rare for these elaborate models to survive.

An example of the same form painted with a Chinaman seated playing a musical instrument beside a table, with a landscape

background and round the edge, four symbols resides in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK
