ANTIQUE BALUCH BALISHT

Persia, Late 19th Century

 

 

Woven of the finest wools as a pillow cover by the tribal ladies as part of a bridal dowry, the balisht, or pillow cover, of

soft wool on wool foundation, with central hooked diamonds on a camel field surrounded by leaf borders, good kelim endings;

desirable green in coloration; all vegetal dyes

 

Condition: Very good; soft glossy wools; three areas of fraying to the selvages

 

Note: The balisht, or pillow covering, was a required part of the dowry of a young woman, upon the betrothal.

Made in pairs, they were often were backed with a flatweave panel, and stuffed with feathers.  Other dowry inclusions

 would comprise a prayer rug, a chanteh (personal bag), and money.  Other items could include salt bags, and bed

coverings. Such weavings are accorded a high degree of prestige among the Baluch weaving groups of Persia.  Today

they serve well as small rugs that can be moved about where a soft or colorful surface is needed.
