Among the most charming 18th century English porcelains were the naturalistically modeled forms - intricately shaped after various flora and fauna, rocks, and shells. Leaf-shaped dishes were perhaps the earliest of the naturalistic porcelains – an influence attributed to the contemporary leaf-shaped dishes of Japan. Overlapping leaf-forms were made by Meissen as early as the 1730’s, and from c1750, interpreted by most English manufactories. Leaf-molded forms eventually grew to include not just dishes – which would have been part of a dessert service – but every manner of porcelain, including sauce and butter boats, salts, pickle dishes, sweetmeat dishes, and tureens. The molding and application of flora also play a large role in early English porcelain. The first examples included white-glazed porcelains - after the Chinese Dehua wares (blanc-de-chine) - modeled with molded applied prunus sprigs. The use of flowers was not simply decorative, but often served to strengthen the porcelain, as the delicate joints of lattice chestnut baskets, whose open-work sides were precisely hand-cut with a knife. On some very rare occasions, the Chinese actually copied the English and European models, both in hard, and in soft paste. When found in soft paste, the copies are somewhat confusing and difficult to discern from the English versions. Although it is impossible to show the range of flower and leaf molding in its entirety in this catalog, we present a brief depiction from our inventory – both available, and a few examples from our past stock. |
